Florida Baking Schools

by Kathleen Gagne

Let's face it, bakery treats are one of the sweetest pleasures in life. Just biting into a quality bakery delight can make the day better, while sitting down in a fine restaurant and sampling a master chef's special concoctions can be almost sinful. For those who love baking melt-in-your-mouth specialty breads and creating holiday cookies, tarts, pies, and marzipans to die for, a career in the field of professional baking can be very rewarding.

Find Baking Schools in Florida

From Miami to Tallahassee, those who want to do their baking and pastry training in Florida are in luck. There are several world-famous cooking schools that offer baking and pastry specialties, including Le Cordon Bleu in multiple locations. Classes in general culinary arts are offered at most of these schools as well.

Generally, candidates can apply to earn either a diploma or an Associate of Science degree. Diploma programs may take as few as 12 months to obtain, while a degree program may take anywhere from 18-24 months. Culinary schools that are associated with colleges and/or universities usually offer Bachelor of Science degrees in culinary arts. The advantage of obtaining one of the higher degrees is that initial earning power is greater, and advancement to upper levels of mastery is usually faster.

When looking for the right Florida baking school, consider issues such as location and living expenses, the types of baking they teach, and whether the school offers financial aid or scholarships. It's also important to carefully compare the course work offered at each school before making a choice. Find out in advance whether the school's baking program qualifies graduates for any culinary certifications.
