Fruit And Vegetable Carving

by Kathleen Gagne

There is a high school in Gainesville, Florida, that is home to an award-winning culinary institute. For several years, this program has trained high school students in the culinary arts. One of the favorite skills among the students is carving intricate and delightful designs in vegetables and fruits.

The Art of Fruit and Vegetable Carving

Learning presentation is one of the core skills for culinary professionals. Enhancing the appeal of foods that have been lovingly and professionally prepared is a key to enticing eaters. Skilled fruit and vegetable carvers can elicit smiles or make mouths water with delight. Everyone who has ever eaten in a fine restaurant or attended a formal catered function has seen some form of this art.

Today's culinary art practitioners have gone way beyond a sprig of parsley as an interesting garnish for a baked potato. Those who like to set a unique table, both in their homes or professionally, can take carving classes as part of a comprehensive culinary arts program. It is also possible to learn the skill by taking a class at a community college. Some culinary art institutes offer these classes in carving for both amateurs and professionals.

On occasion, carved fruits and vegetables are combined in a presentation with flowers, and, in fact, the carved food may be as beautiful as the flowers. Some of the common fruits and vegetables that are carved are watermelons and other melons, radishes, apples, and more. Classes are usually hands-on, and class size is generally small so that everyone who participates can get personalized attention.
