Pastry Chef Schools

by Kathleen Gagne

Who can resist a chocolate nut brownie or an eclair filled to overflowing with sweet custard cream and topped with smooth, delectable chocolate frosting? Let's face it, nearly everyone loves a good piece of pastry. Pastry not only fills your stomach, it warms your soul and brings a silly smile to your face.

French and Italian pastry chefs have created hundreds of mouth-watering recipes that have delighted palates for hundreds of years. Holidays are made for pastry desserts, and a superb piece of blueberry cheesecake can make a stop at the bakery worth the trip. Those who would like to enter the field of pastry arts should begin by searching for a professional culinary institute that offers courses leading to a diploma or degree.

Pastry arts are usually taught as programs offered at most culinary institutes and at some colleges. Generally, the longer the program, the more prestigious the resulting certificate, diploma, or degree will be. Many aspiring pastry arts professionals are people who simply love pastries themselves, and being able to make incredible concoctions leads to a rewarding career.

Students may elect to attend a college or a culinary academy where they can take courses that will lead them to a career as a pastry chef. Pastry chef schools may offer certificate programs that take anywhere from six to 12 months, up to two years for an associate's degree, or even a four-year program that can lead to becoming a master pastry chef. Schools are available all over the United States, and there are even programs offered online.
