Personal Chef Training

Many people who aspire to become chefs want to work in a busy, fast-paced restaurant atmosphere. Still, others like the idea of providing appropriate nutrition to patients in a hospital or nursing care facility. All of these are great paths to follow in the culinary arts field.

There is another path chosen by those who prefer total control in a homier environment. Many of these people become personal chefs or run a personal chef service. Basically, a personal chef is one who caters to the dietary preferences of a single person or a family. Generally, meals are planned and cooked in the client's home, saving the client from having to deal with shopping and cooking chores. Many busy professionals find the services of a personal chef to be an absolute necessity in their lives.

One of the typical tasks performed by a personal chef is learning about the client's tastes. For example, is the client a vegetarian? Does he or she prefer spicy foods or milder ones? Personal chefs usually shop for the food items they need to prepare the client's meals. Most personal chefs cook the food and wrap it for storage in a freezer, often cooking for a week at a time. This means all the client has to do is heat the food. A personal chef may spend one day a week at several different homes.

For those who want to become personal chefs, a good place to start is a culinary academy. Personal chefs must learn about the basics of food preparation and management, and, if they plan to establish their own business and client list, they will need to have an understanding of basic business principles as well. In addition to attending classes and working with dedicated professional teachers, prospective personal chefs can also take home study programs designed just for them. There are even courses that combine both classroom and home study.
