Restaurant Management Courses

by Kathleen Gagne

Managing a restaurant is unlike almost any other business management position. A restaurant manager is totally responsible for the restaurant. This includes hiring and managing employees, ordering supplies and dealing with vendors, making sure the restaurant meets government standards for cleanliness and safety, and making sure the food is good enough to attract and retain customers.

In most cases, in order to become a restaurant manager, a person should have at least a bachelor's degree in the field. There are programs offered at several colleges that will specifically prepare a student for the position of restaurant manager. Some of the areas of study that will be included are basic to most management courses. Topics such as human resources management, marketing, and leadership are the focus.

Courses specific to the restaurant industry may include dining room operations, running a kitchen, sanitation management, and general food service operations. Graduation can lead to starting positions such as pantry cook or assistant dining room manager. Experience in these positions can help the graduate handle greater responsibilities in the kitchen and the dining room.

Culinary arts schools, especially those associated with colleges or universities, are the ideal places to learn the skills necessary for restaurant management. It should be noted that restaurant and hotel management courses and programs can now be taken online from accredited schools. Successful restaurant managers may later choose to open their own restaurants, and the experience of management will be a great benefit. Restaurant management skills can also be translated to other areas related to the food service industry.
