California General Contractors

by Rebecca Russell

Hiring a general contractor can often feel like an arduous task. You have heard the horror story about your uncle's best friend's cousin who wanted a new bathroom and wound up with a hole in her floor, and the tale of the couple who discovered a fissure in their kitchen. Stories like these exist because, as with any profession, there are irresponsible contractors. Fortunately, the vast majority of contractors are honest and experienced. The trick is to find a good one.

General Contractors in California

While many people rely on word of mouth to find a contractor, it often makes sense to put in some extra research when searching for a qualified candidate. Luckily, there are certain helpful websites that allow you to know what questions to ask and what warning signs to look out for. For instance, contractors often use technical phrases and words that may sound a lot like Greek to the untrained ear. Certain sites on the Internet provide some basic definitions so that you can better understand the contractor's proposals.

Additionally, there are websites where you can type in the name and address of a contractor and search for any complaints or problems that have been filed in public record. Using this search is a good idea if you are feeling suspicious about a contractor that you have met; however, even if something does not show on the search, always trust your instincts and do not work with someone you do not trust.

Once you find a general contractor that you would like to work with, be sure that a contract is drawn up. This document will help to protect both you and the contractor, so be sure that you both have copies. Remember, if you are feeling concerned, California state law allows you three days to cancel any contract as long it was not signed in the office of the general contractor. Armed with a little bit of knowledge, you will be able to navigate the waters of renovation with ease.
