Nursing CEUs

by Tara Peris

Every registered nurse is required to complete continuing education units, or CEUs on a regular basis. This course work is designed to keep health care practitioners fluent in state-of-the-art medical techniques. It is also meant to keep them abreast of ethical and legal issues that may impact their professional dealings.

Ongoing Education

Several health care fields require continuing education units, including social work, psychology, nursing, and medicine. The requirements for each field vary from state to state, but just about every active care provider must fulfill them in order to remain licensed. In general, most nurses will have to complete around 30 hours of continuing education every two years.

Fulfilling this requirement rarely proves to be a challenge; the bigger difficulty is choosing the courses you will take. Many states require ongoing training in domestic violence, child abuse, and AIDS/HIV awareness. These courses will take up some of your allotted units, but there are plenty more from which to choose.

In general, continuing education units are designed to give nurses ongoing exposure to the scientific aspects of nursing. Thus, there are countless options involving technical nursing skills and specialty procedures. However, courses in hospital administration, legal issues, and medical Spanish are also popular options. To learn more about how to meet CEU requirements, you should begin by contacting the web site for the Board of Registered Nurses for your specific state. This will orient you to the process and let you know which courses are acceptable for meeting CEU requirements.
