Family Practice Courses

by Tara Peris

Family practice courses span a range of offerings. From the basics of asthma and diabetes management to emergency care and sports medicine, the field of family medicine is remarkably broad. In order to stay abreast of current techniques, doctors must choose their courses wisely and integrate them with ongoing practice.

All in the Family

You will see it all in family practice. From maternity and women's health issues to complex geriatric cases, a family practice physician must master all basic life-span issues. He or she must also be fluent in the pathology and illnesses that often accompany different stages of human development.

It is a tremendous undertaking and one that underscores the importance of ongoing education. Continuing education in family practice can involve a variety of courses depending on needs and professional inclinations. For example, it may entail specialty work with a particular illness or patient population. It may also involve crisis management and intervention. Indeed, some of the most popular classes involve asthma, diabetes, and heart disease management, and these are among the most common ailments seen in family practice.

However, many doctors are extending their CME training to include classes in cultural competence. Recognizing that effective care requires doctors to identify and join with their patients in a more holistic manner, these courses focus on increasing sensitivity to cultural and religious issues that may influence participation in medical care. They are an informative, invaluable complement to ongoing training in family practice care.
