Border Health

by Tara Peris

As the debate around immigration continues to swirl in political circles, the topic of border health has gained center stage in the health care arena. The issue at hand is how to protect public health in regions where travelers pass back and forth between different countries. Indeed, in states such as California, New Mexico, and Mexico, border health is a topic of increasing importance.

Understanding the Issue of Border Health

Every country has a distinct topography that allows certain plant and animal life to flourish. It's why you'll find rainforests in certain parts of the world and not in others. It's why endangered species may be found only in select climates and habitats. It's also why certain diseases cluster in certain areas.

Geographic predisposition and distinct cultural and public health practices mean that some diseases may proliferate more easily in particular environments compared to others. The AIDS epidemic, for example, continues to decimate parts of Africa, but is less pervasive in the West. Similarly, bird viruses and mad cow disease may also be traced to distinct countries of origin.

In the United States, the issue at hand is how to protect public health along both sides of the Mexican border. Most public health initiatives have emphasized the importance of careful screening and vaccinations for those who pass back and forth across the border. However, as border health receives ongoing attention, it is likely that the scope of education and intervention will broaden.
