Summer Medical Student Programs

by Tara Peris

Some of the best summer medical student programs are those that afford an opportunity to travel. By taking learning out of the classroom, these programs provide an enhanced world-view and a more well-rounded perspective on medical care. Moreover, they place emerging physicians in the field in places where their skills are needed the most.

Change of Pace

To be sure, medical students juggle a heavy load. Two years of grueling course work in the hard sciences, a third year filled with challenging hospital rotations, and an endless sequence of board examinations are but a few of the challenges that every medical student will tackle. Although it is an immensely stressful process, this immersion in the medical world is necessary to build core competency in the field.

With this in mind, summer is no time to rest on your laurels. Competitive medical students seek to use the summer months to further their training, either through applied research, volunteer opportunities, or summer programs that allow students to travel abroad. These endeavors can provide a much-needed break from the daily grind in the hospital while still affording valuable learning opportunities.

Indeed, some of the most desirable summer programs are those that allow students to study and train in foreign countries. With a growing list of training sites in Mexico, Central, and South America, medical students have an ideal opportunity to immerse themselves in foreign cultures while gaining valuable Spanish language skills. These skills will make them competitive for residency and well-equipped for the rigors of real-world practice.
