Mexican Medical Schools

by Tara Peris

The structure of most Mexican medical schools is similar to that of U.S. training facilities. Accordingly, students begin with didactic training in the hard sciences and progress systematically toward hands-on training and real world practice. A primary difference, however, pertains to the structure and availability of medical care.

South of the Border

Mexico's oldest medical school is La Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, which dates back to 1935. Although relatively new by U.S. standards, the university contains a wide array of programs for both Mexican and non-native students. Indeed, it is a world-class institution for advanced medical training. It is a role model for newer institutions and a beacon of hope in a country where health care resources remain limited.

La Universidad Autonoma is one of a growing number of Mexican medical schools designed to increase public access to quality physicians. Indeed, a growing number of Mexican medical schools are implementing exchange student programs that increase multi-cultural competence as well as medical proficiency. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement in which students can learn about how health care services are executed in different countries.

Mexican medical schools such as the University of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are gaining popularity in America, as students recognize the importance of Spanish language skills. With a number of summer programs and language immersion opportunities, these schools are providing much-needed assistance with doctor training. Low cost and incredibly accessible, summer programs at Mexican medical schools are now a popular option for many students.
