International Fellowships

by Tara Peris

International fellowships in medicine provide a valuable opportunity for physicians to broaden the scope of their training. Although many procedures and practices are now universal, each country has its own distinctive training opportunities. Whether they come in the form of rare pathology you won't find anywhere else or specialized training tracks, these opportunities can enhance basic training immensely.

Pursuing International Fellowships in Medicine

The structure of medical training has not changed terribly much over the last 100 years. All American doctors complete four years of medical school followed by residency training that can last anywhere from three to eight years depending on the area of specialization. Then, of course, comes fellowship and post-doctoral training. It is a long and arduous road, and one that should only be pursued because of a genuine love of medicine.

Although there are many ways to enrich this basic program, some of the most meaningful opportunities come in the form of international fellowships. These awards vary on the type of program and training that are involved, but they generally provide for free study in a foreign country. This allows young practitioners to learn a new language and to work first-hand in a different cultural climate.

This in turn allows them to provide better medical care. It is a win-win situation for everyone involved, and it is well worth pursuing at any stage of training. International fellowships come in all shapes and sizes, ensuring that there is something to meet every training objective.
