International Medical Centers

International medical centers are charged with a special task. In addition to providing quality health care, they must interact with a wide range of patients from around the world. Shell-shocked, confused, and far from home, these patients are exceedingly vulnerable, both physically and emotionally. The physicians who treat them must be familiar not only with basic medical procedures, but with the interpersonal skills that help patients to recover as well.

Providing Effective Care to International Populations

Many international medical centers specialize in specific procedures that cannot be performed elsewhere. From high-risk surgeries such as organ transplants to the treatment of infectious diseases, these facilities are designed to treat medically complex cases. As a result, people are flown in from around the world for services.

Other international medical centers are joint enterprises that merge American and foreign resources. For example, the U.S. has collaborative medical centers in Shanghai and other Eastern destinations, and these are designed to provide quality health care to large and varied patient populations. The integration of resources makes for a rich treatment setting because multiple resources and perspectives are integrated in care

Regardless of the type of facility, international medical centers share a common goal of providing quality care to people who are far from home. Thus, they typically offer translators who can assist with acclimating patients to the health care setting. These translators coupled with medical staff well versed in working with international patients make for quality care no matter what the setting.
