Tiger Shark Diving

by Rebecca Russell

The ocean covers over 70 percent of the earth's surface and houses more varieties of life than most people can imagine. At the top of the ocean food chain is the shark, which preys upon a variety of animals, from marine mammals to sea turtles to tiny organisms. While not all varieties are carnivorous, most people envision sharks with jagged teeth, pulling chunks of flesh from the bodies of their prey. This vision might be most accurately associated with the great white and the tiger shark.

The vast majority of people are familiar with the great white due to its starring role in the book, Jaws, and the movie of the same name. The tiger shark, however, is not as widely recognized, but commands the same level of respect and trepidation as the great white. The tiger shark, named for the striped markings across its back, is known for its willingness to consume almost anything--dead, alive, or inanimate. This characteristic makes the tiger shark a particularly dangerous animal to encounter in the ocean.

Diving with Tiger Sharks

There are many who enjoy diving with a variety of different shark species. With great white expeditions becoming more and more prevalent, there are a few companies that are beginning to offer tiger shark adventures. A little research on the Internet will quickly lead interested parties to information on tiger shark diving expeditions.

In some cases, companies are equipped to offer free dives with tiger sharks. It should be noted that these dives are only for experienced divers and the intrepid souls who will feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of meeting a tiger shark underwater. As almost every diving expedition company will tell you, it is important to treat these animals with the respect that they deserve, and by doing so, you will undoubtedly have the dive of your life.
