Shark Diving
Hammerhead Shark DivingOne of the most recognizable shark species is the hammerhead. The hammerhead, when viewed from above, has a body shaped, rather predictably, like a hammer. While there are many theories as to the evolutionary purpose for this oddly shaped creature, most people now assume that it gives the shark heightened sensory awareness. These marvels of the ocean are found both in open water and near the coastlines where the water is not as deep. A particularly interesting fact about the hammerhead shark is that, like fish, certain types of hammerhead can be found in schools. Little is known about the reasons for this schooling. Hammerheads do not mate in schools, as fish do, and they have few, if any, predators so they do not need the protection that a school provides. Like many species of shark, the hammerhead is a mystery, which makes the study of it all the more desirable to scientists and lay people. Free Diving with Hammerhead SharksFor any shark enthusiast, the opportunity to dive with these animals is truly amazing. There are a variety of organizations that offer free dives with hammerhead sharks, particularly in tropical environments such as the Bahamas. These diving expeditions often take place off of a luxury, live-aboard yacht that can generally accommodate up to 12 passengers and their diving gear. The packages are generally all-inclusive and are truly the opportunity of a lifetime. If you are considering embarking upon a dive, you should be well aware of your own physical fitness level. It is imperative that you be a certified diver. If you have been certified but haven't been in the water for a few years, most programs recommend that you go on a few practice dives before the trip. Additionally, you should be aware of your own limitations. Diving with sharks can be dangerous, even with trained professionals. You should be sure that you can remain calm under stress and treat the animals with the respect they command and deserve. ![]() Get all Adventure Travel articles via
