Cage Divers

by Rebecca Russell

If you have ever watched nature shows on television, you know the thrill that can come from being surrounded by wild animals. While almost anyone can describe the wonder that comes from a visit to a zoo or an aquarium, encountering an animal in the wild evokes completely separate emotions. Ask a friend or relative who has been on a safari and they will tell you that it is unlike any other experience in the world.

Safaris are typically experienced from the relative safety of an open vehicle. For those who are fascinated with ocean life, the equivalent is a cage dive. The cage allows divers to see and come close to ocean life with the protection of steel bars keeping them from any real danger. Cages are typically used during shark dives, which are becoming increasingly popular.

The safety provided by the cages is almost unmatched. They are made of stainless or galvanized steel and are equipped with special flotation devices to keep the cage as steady as possible in the movement of the ocean. All shark cages are required to be checked, yearly, for structural integrity and are only permitted in the water if they pass rigorous inspection.

Shark Watching from a Safe Distance

If your loved one seems excited by the prospect of sharks, but you consider yourself a landlubber, there are many benefits to being a ride-along passenger on a cage dive. Because the top of the cages float near the surface of the water, there will often be opportunities to view sharks from above, surfacing to attack the bait or decoy. Just be sure to take along a camera to record all of the action.
