Great White Shark Adventures

by Rebecca Russell

The great white shark is an incredible creature, known as the most dangerous animal in the ocean. They have inspired legends and great novels and have piqued the curiosity of many researchers. Some of the information we do know about the great white shark is that they live lengthy lives and are slow to reach sexual maturity. Additionally, the female great white will only give birth a few times in her life, which makes the reproduction rate rather slow. The causes of their behavior, however, remain somewhat of a mystery.

Uncovering the Mysteries of the Great White Shark

Perhaps it is this mysterious behavior that causes great white sharks to be feared. White sharks do not often hold up well in captivity, which makes them difficult to study from close range. These days, there are many efforts in place to track living white sharks in their natural habitat, but even with these efforts, the white shark remains somewhat elusive.

There are those who make great white sharks their livelihood, however, and if the opportunity to encounter one intrigues you, it may be worth looking into a great white shark adventure. These adventures are typically three to five day tours to specific diving sites where great whites are known to travel. Divers are lowered into cages, and then the sharks are attracted using a variety of methods, and most often, the sharks will become curious and swim right up next to the cages offering a close look at their magnificence.

Shark baiting techniques used for these adventures has become somewhat of a widespread controversy. Using decoys to attract sharks is now the widely accepted strategy that does not conflict with the delicate ocean ecosystem. Certain companies use chum to attract sharks, but this can upset the marine life and vastly change the natural behavior of the shark. If you are looking into companies that offer cage diving, you may want to look for ones that primarily use decoys.
