White Shark Documentaries

by Rebecca Russell

If you have owned a television with cable in the past few years, chances are you have heard of Shark Week. Shark Week is one of the most talked about events of the year. While it may seem odd, this week filled with nature shows and documentaries is often fodder for water cooler discussions, which are generally reserved for gossip and sitcom television wrap-ups. Perhaps in this new reality television culture, audiences are more open to documentaries, or perhaps it is simply the lure of the shark.

Educational Shark Documentaries
Whatever the reason, there are many people who find documentaries, particularly on the great white shark, incredibly fascinating. Images of great, gaping jaws or of the shark swimming pointedly toward the camera are difficult to tear your eyes from. Those who make the documentaries, however, are generally better at filming than at diving. For this reason, they must seek out those who can lead them to the sharks.

There are a few groups of expert shark divers who are often asked to participate in these documentaries. Those filming want to be sure that they can get the shots they want, and as with any movie, time is money. The dive teams are very familiar with the sharks and their usual playgrounds, so much so that often they recognize repeat shark visitors by tags or distinctive markings.

Additionally, there are particular shark diving teams who are committed to educating the general public about shark behavior and debunking all of the myths surrounding these animals about which they are so passionate. Interviews with these individuals are often coveted material for documentaries. As any filmmaker knows, it is fascinating to watch someone who truly loves the subject they are being interviewed about and fascinating footage makes for a great film.
