Shark Diving
Wolf IslandWolf Island is part of the famed Galapagos Islands, known chiefly as the location where Darwin was first inspired to theorize about evolution. Wolf, along with its nearby cousin Darwin, is the very top of an inactive volcano. The visible land is only about 250 meters above the ocean surface, but the bottom extends down over 1,000 meters to the floor of the ocean. This small island is home to some of the best shark diving in the western hemisphere. From schools of hammerheads to the gigantic whale shark, Wolf Island is a wonderful dive destination. It is a rather long journey from the main islands, however, and is only attempted by those who have live-aboard yachts. Tips for Diving near Wolf IslandDivers interested in taking a trip to Wolf Island should be sure that they have the proper certification and experience. If you are interested in SCUBA diving, there are many programs available that can certify you rather quickly. It is important to remember, however, that certification does not equal experience. As an example, imagine if you had just been certified as a carpenter. Perhaps you would have all the tools and knowledge to build a full-sized house, but you would be better off starting with something much smaller. The same is true for diving. Once you are certified, you will have all of the tools and knowledge that will enable you to be a safe and cautious diver. Practice on a number of deep-water dives, however, is the only way to become a truly experienced diver. The conditions around Wolf Island can be rather dangerous, with choppy water and delicate marine life, and diving here is recommended only for experienced divers. ![]() Get all Adventure Travel articles via
