Shark Pictures

by Rebecca Russell

Everyone has experienced a slide show, whether the old-fashioned variety flashing onto a big screen or a new, automated PowerPoint presentation. No matter what the medium, slide shows are almost always the universal recipe for bored guests. There are a few photography subjects, however, that are guaranteed to delight even the most discriminating viewer and wild animals--sharks in particular--are almost always on the top of that list. In most cases, the more dangerous the animal, the more interesting the photograph.

Most of the time, if you do not own a telescope lens, you must be very close to your subject in order to get the best shots. Unfortunately, as almost everyone knows, it is often rather difficult to get nature to cooperate. In the case of sharks, for instance, the opportunity for spontaneous pictures is slim to none. However, for those interested in snapping shots of these underwater predators, there are a few ways of getting up close and personal.

Tips for Getting Incredible Shark Photos

Diving adventure trips are becoming more and more popular, even for inexperienced divers. Particularly for those interested in viewing great white sharks, there is the option of cage diving. A steel cage is lowered into the water with the top of the cage just at the surface of the water. Various methods are used to attract sharks from chum to styrofoam decoys meant to look like seals and after a time, divers are lowered into the cage to wait for the action to begin.

On a good day, curious sharks will swim right up to the submerged cage in search of the food source. This puts them within perfect shooting range for even the most basic underwater camera and will almost guarantee some incredible shark photos. While impressing your friends should not be the real reason you choose to embark on a shark dive, there is something about showing a photograph or home video of a ferocious, wild creature that will give you a slightly elevated status--at least for the duration of the slideshow.
