Athlete's Foot And Lamisil

by Adam Blau

Those people who suffer from the stinging pain of athlete's foot can take solace in the fact that one of the strongest prescription-strength antifungal medications is now available in an over-the-counter format. Lamisil is an antifungal agent containing terbinafine, a compound that seeks out fungus and destroys it thoroughly. At its prescription strength, Lamisil is available as a tablet or a topical cream.

One form of the medication, Lamisil AT, has been recently approved for distribution as an over-the-counter treatment. This cream is particularly helpful for those looking to eradicate stubborn athlete's foot or other similar fungus-induced conditions. Many doctors will recommend Lamisil as a treatment not only for athlete's foot, but for jock itch, ringworm, and other similar infections.

Which Version of Lamisil Is Right for You?

True, over-the-counter Lamisil is effective at treating many symptoms of fungus. For true strength and complete thoroughness in ridding your body of fungus once and for all, though, physicians may recommend full-potency prescription-strength Lamisil. Taken in its tablet form, the terbinafine enters the bloodstream, where it will congregate around infected areas.

Once the Lamisil is in the infected area, it will destroy the fungus--be it athlete's foot, dermatophytes in the nail bed, or any other similar infestation. What's more, Lamisil will by nature stay in the nail bed and surrounding areas for a long while after the fungus is demolished, sticking around to battle any other potential outbreaks or spreading of the fungus. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you need Lamisil at prescription strength, or even whether or not it is the correct medication for your athlete's foot or fungus.
