Employee Training

by Serena Berger

There are several reasons that companies may consider additional employee training or revamping the current training they offer. While some training may focus on industry-specific job skills, other forms of training are applicable to a broad range of positions. Providing additional employee training can boost morale and motivation among employees, ultimately resulting in increased productivity and financial gains for the company.

Among the reasons to embark on employee training is a poor evaluation. While it may not be cost effective to set up a training session based on the performance of a single individual, if the company finds a recurring problem (perhaps within a particular department or specific functional area), it may be worthwhile to set up a training session. Employee training, however, does not to have to be indicative of bad news. It may be part of a training program that prepares the best employees to assume more senior positions.

One area in which many employees can benefit from training is communications. This serves not only employees, but their managers as well, allowing the entire workforce to learn how to communicate more effectively with each other, as well as with clients. If you sense friction in the workplace, you may also want to include sessions that address conflict resolution and team building. There are other topics such as sexual harassment and safety that, while not enjoyable, may be necessary to ensure an atmosphere conducive to productivity.

Reasons to Conduct Employee Training

So why bother with employee training if it is not absolutely necessary? One reason is that it will minimize legal risks to the company, as employees can be made aware of policies relating to diversity and sexual harassment. It can also allow firms to upgrade their equipment, as employees typically need to be trained in new systems and on the most state-of-the-art equipment.
