Leadership Development

by Serena Berger

It used to be the case that you would start working for a company and slowly move up the ranks over the course of several years. Workers today are much more mobile than they were in the past, often switching jobs after just a few years. In order for companies to retain the best talent, they need to allow employees the opportunity to hone their skills and gain experience as leaders.

That is why leadership development is common in many companies today. These programs often include mentoring with more senior employees. In addition, such development entails placing employees in supervisory positions in which they are responsible not only for their own work, but for the work of the employees reporting to them.

Leadership Development Can Benefit Your Current Managers

Leadership development, however, should not be reserved for the next generation of leaders. It can help your current staff of managers improve their communication skills, improving their relationships with their employees and ultimately making them more effective leaders. There are a wide variety of ways in which managers might improve their leadership skills--anything from corporate team building retreats to participating in 360 degree evaluations in which they are critiqued by their employees.

Just because an employee has progressed to the status of a manager, it does not mean that he has nothing left to learn. Managers may need to tailor their styles to suit the culture of the company and the personalities of their employees. Learning to adapt to changes is a crucial skill for leaders to develop so that their performance remains at a high level in spite of any unexpected events.
