Beat The MarketAfter the bear market of 2001, the popularity of index funds grew tremendously. This is because many investors grew tired of receiving "hot" stock tips from money managers and brokers who still couldn't beat the market. While investing in index funds is cost-efficient, you will never beat the market because you are essentially buying a fund that mimics the market. Investing to Beat the MarketIf you're a gung-ho investor, your goal is probably to beat the returns of the stock market. On average, the stock market returns 15 percent per year. With a little active trading, you can certainly try to earn more than 15 percent on your investments. It's important, however, to place limits for yourself. Once you reach 20 percent gains in one year, you may want to put trading on hold for a while. There's nothing wrong with taking gains! In order to truly beat the stock market, however, you're going to have to do something differently than every other investor. Finding an independent financial advisor who specializes in technical and fundamental analysis is a good start. Combining the two investment philosophies can help yield tremendous returns in your portfolio. When you're looking for an advisor, start by looking at track records. Most professionals will publicly report their report cards for you to analyze. Additionally, look for areas to invest in that are neglected by most investors. Being a contrarian can sometimes be helpful. If you want results, you'll need to find unique sources of information. The most important thing to remember is to do things differently than other investors. When everyone else is buying utilities, maybe you should consider buying technology. Seeking the advice of a professional is important, however, so that you can understand why other investors are ignoring technology. Unique information and resources are the holy grails of the investment world. ![]() Get all Stocks articles via
