Stock Portfolio Management

by Erin Jones

There are several different types of stock portfolio management. Some investors use the discretionary advice of portfolio managers at financial firms. Other investors rely on their own advice and act as their own portfolio managers. Keeping a watchful eye on a portfolio of investments, however, can be a full time job.

Styles of Stock Portfolio Management

There are two main styles of management for stock selections--fundamental analysis and technical analysis. Since technical analysis is considered a specialty, most financial professionals use fundamental analysis. Fundamental analysis values a stock based on company-specific issues, including the experience of the management, future earnings capabilities, and product lines.

Since fundamental analysts also evaluate companies based on financial statements, like income reports and balance sheets, it can be difficult for individuals to understand all the work that goes into valuing companies. If you don't have the mathematical experience or time required to do your own stock portfolio management, there are several resources you can use to make quality investment selections.

Using an independent financial advisor is a great way to find investment advice. Several independent advisors actually write newsletters and other stock tip publications to make receiving valuable advice cost-effective for investors of all levels. Since the amount of financial information out there is overwhelming, it will be helpful for you to have someone or something that can help you break down the information into important tips.
