Lipitor And Alcohol

by Joshua Billings

Over the past few years, the statin drug Lipitor has rocketed to the forefront of the world pharmaceutical community. A prescription drug that lowers harmful levels of LDL cholesterol in the human bloodstream, it has proven to be an incredibly popular way of dealing with one of modern medicine's biggest problems: heart disease. In 2004 alone, it posted sales of over $10.4 billion, making it the best-selling drug in the world.

However, as with most new drugs, Lipitor has attracted a certain amount of concern over its less-documented side effects. These range from simple gas, bloating, and cramps, to the possibility of muscle pains and muscular disease. Though rare, these conditions are certainly possibilities that every Lipitor user or prospective user should be aware of.

One of the things that most people don't realize about Lipitor is that using it can put a certain amount of stress on your liver. Usually this is no problem: the stress level is so low that your body easily absorbs it. In conjunction with heavy alcohol use, however, certain serious problems can crop up.

Lipitor warning labels usually state that you should take no alcohol with Lipitor. This is because, like Lipitor, heavy alcohol use puts a lot of stress on your liver, which is responsible for cleansing your body of toxins such as those found in beer, wine, etc. Though some doctors (such as specialists at http://www.druginfonet.com) will tell you that a certain small amount of drinking is acceptable, it's important to recognize the possible dangers that could result from this.
