Metal Cutting Tools
Glass Cutting ToolsMany industries employ glass-cutting tools at various stages, from manufacturing to automotive repair. Glass drills and glass cutters all have specific uses and, in many cases, waterjet cutting machines or water swivels are needed to keep materials cooled during the cutting process. Such cooling provides clean cuts and greatly extends the life of the tool. Drill bits begin at a size of 1/32" in diameter, but can be purchased in sets of 30 different sizes. Diamond circular saw blades are made in diameters from one and a half inches to 72 inches. On the other hand, continuous rim blades, used for cutting precious metals as well as glass, are manufactured with four inch to 14" diameters. The difference in available sizes indicates that all cutting tools have their scientific and practical limitations. Cutting, grinding, and finishing wheels are available in several sizes, depending on the industry. Each is equipment specific, so the manufacturer's recommendations must be followed. Some manufacturers will state boldly that their tooling is manufactured in the USA. Other equipment is deliberately manufactured offshore to reduce costs, or is imported as needed. Other Glass Cutting ToolsGlass cutting tools are also used in bottle glass cutting, stained glass design, and picture framing. Some processes require a mat cutter, either board mounted or handheld. Prolonged glass cutting may produce fatigue, since cutting usually has to be done while standing up to maintain the right cutting angle. However, innovative glass cutting tools can reduce the strain, while maintaining the required 90° cutting angle. For handheld cutters, cushioning grips reduce the discomfort on the hand, though not the back. ![]() Get all Saws articles via
