Tile Cutting Tools

by Shirley Parker

The construction industry needs durable, precision tile saws and tile blades when installing tile in homes, businesses, and elsewhere. A variety of established manufacturers compete for their ongoing business with workhorse equipment. In addition, newer firms, whose products were designed with innovative features, are making a distinct impression in the industry.

On the home front, hand tile cutting tools may be more useful, especially for small jobs like a half or quarter bath, or a kitchenette. That is, unless a homeowner has another saw that will cut tile without damaging it. However, lightweight, handheld diamond tile saws are available and get the job done neatly and quickly. Locking tile cutting pliers, hole cutters, and nippers can handle adjustments to individual tiles, so that they fit around door jambs, washstands, and other obstructions.

The serious tile professional, even if he installs tile as a moonlighter, will want the best tools he can get. Portability and high horsepower may well be the most important features of such a tile saw. Diamond tile blades from some manufacturers are available in a wide range of sizes.

Additional Tools for Tile Cutting

Other needed tile cutting tools include undercut saws, backer board knives, diamond files for tile, marble, granite and glass, and hand scraper grout saws. Of course, every tile installation will also require other tools, such as L screeds, a joint knife, spacer popper, grout sealant and bag, sponges and cleaning supplies, and a tool bag. Sometimes overlooked by first-time tile installers is the need for clothing that fits properly, protective gloves and eyewear, safe shoes, and knee pads.
