Subaru Performance EnginesA Subaru performance engine can reduce your emissions, improve your fuel mileage, and stabilize your idle motor. One of the more innovative techniques for upgrading Subaru engines is the Active Valve Control System, an automated electronic monitoring system that varies your intake and exhaust operations. The mechanics of the AVCS are complicated, but the ultimate effect of this upgrade is to more ideally position your camshafts for combustion. The AVCS employs state-of-the-art sensors, which measure coolant temperature, camshaft position, the angle of your throttle, and the amount of airflow you take into your engine. All these variables need to be calculated and recalibrated practically instantaneously, so the onboard computer has to be updated regularly. If you notice irregularities in your engine--particularly at high speeds--you may need an AVCS adjustment. Subaru AVCS Performance EnginesKeeping in mind that some older mechanics may not understand the complexities of the AVCS, you may need to take your car to an official Subaru performance engine dealer. While traditional mechanics should be able to identify any issues with your AVCS readily enough, you don't want to take chances with this expensive and critical component. There are also subtle differences in terms of adjusting belt driven and chain driven engines. Varying your intake and exhaust controls should give you more power at high speeds, but you may also want to adjust your exhaust system for optimum engine performance. Without an efficient muffler, air may not leave your engine fast enough for it to extract the maximum mechanical energy from the fuel / air admixture.
