Subaru Struts

by Andrew Kozlov

One way to get better gas mileage and relieve stresses on the chassis of your Subaru is to upgrade your struts. With specialty springs, like Prodrive springs, you can lower the height of your chassis by up to an inch and thereby eliminate some of the torsional forces that arise when you drive on twisty roads. Of course, you should tailor your STI strut upgrade for your driving habits and skills.

If you go off-roading a lot, or if you race, you want a low suspension that can handle the road. If you drive recreationally or spend most of your time in the city, you may not need a super low suspension. That said, just by lowering your vehicle two centimeters, you should get a return of about 20 percent in your spring rate, which is significant, especially in difficult road conditions.

Caring for Your Subaru Struts

In addition to reducing stresses on your struts, you may want to invest in STI Subaru brakes. Upgrading to performance brakes empowers you on the road and allows you to dissipate heat more effectively. Thus, it takes a lot longer to work through your brake pads, and you can better control your vehicle in off road conditions and in rough weather. Bear in mind that performance brakes make more noise and stir up more dust.

Another way to take the load off of your struts is to invest in fuel efficient components, like the Subaru AVCS system. This is a modification to your engine, which automatically adjusts when your valves open to optimize engine cycle overlap. With an AVCS system in place, your engine will run stronger, and you'll be less likely to overburden your struts.
