Learn English

by Felipe Gomez

Everyone has his or her own reason to learn English. In my case, I didn't make the choice. My parents made it for me when I was still a young child, thinking perhaps it would be useful for me to know it. Which is to say in a certain way the culture offered the choice for them, and they decided to go ahead with it.

I said I didn't make the choice to learn English. But I did, however, make the choice to keep learning, to improve it, and not to let it go to waste. The combination of my parent's choice and my own has provided me with many of the opportunities I have been presented with throughout my life.

English: A Door-Opener

Knowing English allowed me to travel to different countries and communicate with people from different cultures, and I don't mean only the cultures of English-speaking countries. It also gave me the chance to get work as an EFL and ESL teacher and as a translator, with which I was able to pay for my undergraduate education. Had I not known English well enough it would have been very difficult for me to be accepted into a graduate program at a US University.

Nowadays, with the advance of electronic communications, much of the information that's out there is written in English. Because I know English, I can read about any topic that interests me in international journals, newspapers, and magazines. Proficiency in English has also allowed me to read books by Edgar Allan Poe, H.P Lovecraft, Don DeLillo, and some other authors that interest me. As you can see, English has opened many doors for me, both at the professional and the personal levels. It will, undoubtedly, do so for you too.
