TOEFL Practice

by Felipe Gomez

One thing I learned from my experience taking the TOEFL is the need for practice. If you're attempting to obtain a high TOEFL score, as you most certainly are, you need to be as prepared as is humanly possible. This will mean much more than taking your English language to the desired level.

Practice Is Key

As an EFL teacher, I thought I had everything I needed to excel in the TOEFL. I was so wrong. I hadn't had focused practice on the types of questions I would be asked. I hadn't practiced keeping my concentration through long sessions of listening and reading exercises. What's even worse, I had no clue as to how a computer-based test could challenge me in different ways than a paper-based one.

Being prepared for the TOEFL means all this and more. Test-taking is in itself a skill, and it will be evaluated along with your language skills. As with the rest of your skills, in order to be developed it demands time, thought and energy.

You can certainly do this by yourself: get a TOEFL practice booklet and set out a couple hours every day to work on it. But if you know you lack the discipline, perhaps a safer bet will be to join a TOEFL practice course. It will definitely be easier to keep motivated through the process if you're working with others who are in the same boat as you. Besides, you will have an experienced teacher to clarify your doubts and pinpoint areas to improve.
