TOEFL Exam

by Felipe Gomez

The TOEFL seeks to assess the level of English possessed by a non-native speaker. It measures the individual's ability to use and understand standard North American English. The computerized exam includes three areas of assessment--reading, listening and writing--although a newer version which also includes speaking is set to be launched very soon.

Currently, about one million people take the TOEFL every year. The exam is required for admission to most of the North American colleges and universities. Additionally, government agencies and international institutions and corporations may also require TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency level of their potential employees.

CBT and iBT

The Computer-Based TOEFL, or CBT, is offered at colleges, universities, and testing centers throughout the world. The test is structured as follows: after a brief introduction explaining the basics of computer operation, four sections measure the ability to understand and recognize standard spoken, written and academic English and also the ability to write on a topic. With the exception of the introductory section, all sections have time-limits of between 30 and 90 minutes to be completed.

The internet-Based test, or iBT, will also include a mandatory Academic Speaking Test which will measure the individual's ability to communicate in an academic setting. This new format will allow for the recording and processing of oral responses. The iBT, set to be launched in the United States in September 2005, will gradually be implemented in Canada and parts of Europe, and is set to be available worldwide in 2006. In the meantime, the CBT TOEFL will continue to be normally used and accepted.
