TOEFL Exam Preparation

TOEFL Class

by Felipe Gomez

Resources enabling you to prepare for the TOEFL on your own do exist. However, from what I have observed teaching EFL and ESL, students in a TOEFL class have a greater chance to succeed in their goal of scoring a high grade. There are several reasons why this could be the case.

Benefits of Joining a TOEFL Class

Preparing effectively for a test such as the TOEFL demands discipline and motivation over a significant period of time. When you are studying by yourself it is easy to leave aside your daily English chores to favor more urgent matters, or even to give yourself a break. When you register for a TOEFL class this doesn't happen as easily. Being part of a class means a daily commitment to partake in the preparation for the exam, and this can help you be responsible for your learning even on days when you don't really feel like it.

Being part of a class also means having several others think about the same issues at the same time. This can translate into encountering mistakes or doubts where you wouldn't normally see them while working on your own. Finding solutions to problems is also easier if you're working in a group. Having a teacher directing your learning will definitely come in handy in these sorts of situations.

Attending a TOEFL class can also give you the chance to take practice tests in very similar conditions to the ones you will encounter when you take the actual test. Familiarizing yourself with test-taking conditions and strategies can end up being more important than it is apparent. Plus, while you are at it, you are likely to meet a number of people in your class, and even start new friendships with some of them. Sounds appealing, doesn't it?
