ESL School

by Felipe Gomez

ESL schools are those located in countries like Canada, the United States, or the United Kingdom, where English is the main language for communication. They respond to different needs and work in a different way than EFL schools. The latter are located in places where English is not essential for everyday life.

When working in EFL environments, teachers and students must try to simulate as far as possible those real-life situations in which the language can be employed. This does not happen in ESL environments. Under such circumstances, those real-life situations are readily available both inside and outside the school's doors.

Learn Faster and Better

ESL students are prone to learn the language faster and, to a certain extent, more accurately. This may happen because they're constantly surrounded by situations in which they need to put their English to work. As humans, we tend to pay more attention when our survival or well-being depends on it.

Many ESL schools incorporate, as part of their courses, outdoor experiences from which their students can benefit. In Canada, for instance, certain ESL schools offer their students the chance to travel to Niagara Falls or Vancouver Island for a few days in the company of their peers and teachers. Other schools have instituted short expeditions to local sites and attractions once or twice a week. Going to the movies or eating out at a restaurant, spending the day at the lake or going to a hockey game are all activities which can be enjoyed by students while they work with the language in context and gain some valuable cultural experience.
