Mental Illness

by Katie Klein

Mental illness in a family member can affect the whole family. Regardless of the seriousness of the mental illness, the dynamics of relationships can shift as the moods of the person with the illness change. It is important for family members to stay open to the opportunities that are available for counseling, both for individuals and for the family as a whole, in order to help to understand and cope with the changes going on within the family unit.

Sometimes when mental illness strikes a member of one's family, it is hard to stay focused on the whole picture. Many times, it is difficult to simply get through each day. It is important for the caretaker in the family to take care of him or herself, so that the burden of the mentally ill family member does not take too big a toll on the caretaker.

If a family member is unable to care for himself on a daily basis due to severe mental illness, it may be necessary to seek outside help for living arrangements. Speak to your mental health professional if you feel that this may be needed in your case. Some areas have group homes available for those with varying degrees of mental illness. It may prove easier for all family members if the mentally ill person lives out of the family home, yet close enough to visit.

Where to Seek Respite on a Temporary Basis

It is all too common for the caretaker in any healthcare situation to feel overwhelmed. It is important for him or her to seek out quiet time, a time to regroup and relax, to get away from the everyday problems and take some time for himself. Some people find that praying or meditation helps. For others, there are groups where they can discuss their problems and to have others to reach out to who are in similar situations.

Often there are people who can provide respite for the caretaker by having the person with the mental illness stay overnight. The financial situation of your family may be taken into account and a sliding scale may be available. Check with your local mental health organization for a list of possible respite workers in your area.
