Addiction And Mental Health

by Katie Klein

If one is good, are two better? This is a case when one is more than enough. But sometimes with one, the other comes along, like it or not. Many addictions in themselves are symptoms of a form of mental illness. Sometimes it takes a serious episode for a person to realize that the problem he or she thought was "not really that bad" is, in actuality, life threatening.

In the case of a woman who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day, it may be more difficult to find her mental health issue than in the man who snorts coke from the minute he wakes up in the morning. Take either vice away, though, and both will have serious withdrawal symptoms, which, in turn, will magnify their respective mental health problems.

When the person suffering from addiction and mental health problems finally seeks help, it is in his best interest to coordinate his regimens with each healthcare professional so that they can work together to help him. Treatment is much more successful if done in unison, rather than working with one problem or the other. If handled one at a time, there could be a tendency to bounce back and forth between the two problems in order to give oneself a false sense of well-being.

Resources for Treating Addiction and Mental Health Issues

When looking for treatment assistance for addiction and mental health, it may be necessary to look outside of your immediate area. It is possible that the best alternative for your care or the care of a loved one is in a residential treatment facility far from home, even out of your state. Discuss the possibilities with your mental health professional in order to find out what your options may be.

If it is necessary to go out of your state for care, The National Institute of Mental Health may be able to suggest some facilities that would be useful. The NIMH is an excellent source of information, primarily on mental health issues, but also on the subject of addiction. With their assistance, you will receive knowledgeable guidance in your search for mental health care.
