Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Mountain

by Edoardo Ballerini

The main winter attraction near Big Bear Lake is Big Bear Mountain. The two ski resorts of Bear Mountain and Snow Summit offer hundreds of acres of skiing and snowboarding for all levels, 20 lifts, a vertical drop of 1,665 feet, seven snowboard parks, and an average snowfall of 100 inches. With all that the area has to offer, it's easy to understand how it became so popular. And should the natural snowfall not be enough, snow is made every season.

Coming Down the Mountain

During summer months, the mountain is certainly not put to waste. Mountain bikers enjoy the runs of the area. It should be noted that the trails are not maintained and can be hazardous, so always proceed with caution and the appropriate safety gear. For those who don't relish the idea of an uphill climb, the Scenic Sky Chair operates on weekends and will drop you and your bike off at the top of the mountain for a 100 percent downhill experience.

The mountain is also home to the Big Bear Discovery Center, which offers guided tours of natural life in the mountain, most notably the eagles. There is also the Moonridge Animal Park, a local zoo that homes many endangered species.

For the less tour-minded, the mountain is full of trails that visitors are welcome to hike at their own pace. The visitors center has maps you can pick up before you go to help you safely traverse the area. Finally, several companies offer horseback riding tours through the region.
