South Pacific Vacations

by Wendy Jackson

While soaking up the sun and playing in the water are usually on the top of everyone's list, many travelers to the South Pacific are also interested in exploring the culture of the islands through food and drink. Many resorts are catering to this desire by offering authentic island meals in addition to their regular menu.

Flavor of the South Pacific

One traditional drink in the South Pacific is Kava. Guests on the islands can attend a Kava Ceremony. Kava is not a very attractive drink. Its appearance is often likened to muddy water. It is made from ground plant roots and has a peppery taste. A Kava Ceremony consists of sitting in a circle and passing a Kava bowl around for sipping. This drink is said to relax even the most tense of individuals and often becomes a favorite among guests. Tradition goes that for an individual to be welcomed into a village, they were required to bring a Kava drink with them.

The chefs throughout the islands of the South Pacific prepare many tasty dishes that will please the most finicky eater. Fresh seafood such as pacific green lobster, yellow fin tuna, snapper, prawns and wahoo are island delicacies. Fruit drinks and desserts are made from papayas, coconuts, star fruit, mangoes and other tropical fruits that are hand picked on the islands. The chefs are also interested in pleasing someone who is on a restrictive diet, and will make a special meal for any guest.

Part of the thrill and excitement when traveling to the South Pacific is the dining experience. Whether it's a buffet of Mongolian BBQ, or a quiet mountain top candle lit dinner, the foods of the South Pacific please almost everyone.
