Oceanside Real Estate

by Sandy Mitchell

Oceanside is a bustling town with 150,000 residents located north of San Diego in the shadow of the U.S. Marine Corps base, Camp Pendleton. Oceanside was a sleepy seaside retreat popular with 1920s movie directors and stars such as Douglas Fairbanks until the U.S. government moved next door in the 1940s bringing jobs, opportunities, and lots of people.

Today, Oceanside is a thriving community. Though its fortunes are still enmeshed with those of Camp Pendleton, Oceanside is also home to hundreds of businesses and manufacturers. The California Surf museum is located here, as is the largest Spanish mission in California, the Mission San Luis Rey.

Make Oceanside Your Home

Unlike some of her neighbors, Oceanside is a bustling city, not a sleepy seaside community. As such, Oceanside offers a wide range of housing. Single-family homes and condos are available in many price ranges with over half of them built within the last decade. Housing is concentrated in three areas: the city center with older housing close to the beach, the marina, which is further from town but near the water, and the new developments in the hills east of town.

Condos are still obtainable in Oceanside for under $200,000. As in other cities in Southern California, Spanish architecture is popular here with details such as stucco exteriors, red tile roofs, and decorative ironwork. Many of the condos in Oceanside are in new developments, and the gentle hills here give many properties ocean views even though the ocean is miles away.
