El Cajon Real EstateEl Cajon is a community of 94,000 residents located approximately 13 miles east of San Diego. Originally settled in the early 1800s, El Cajon's historic downtown district has recently been revitalized with restored office buildings, new restaurants, and shopping. In 1991, El Cajon's downtown was designated as a California Main Street Community, a program affiliated with the National Preservation Trust. Summer brings all kinds of activities to downtown El Cajon. Free Friday evening concerts attract classic, jazz, and popular music fans from all over San Diego County. A farmer's market selling flowers, produce, and crafts sets up weekly and the East County Performing Arts Center in downtown El Cajon hosts wine festivals, concerts, dance, and lecturers. Affordable and CharmingReal estate prices in El Cajon are significantly less than those in some of the neighboring, oceanfront communities. According to the El Cajon Chamber of Commerce, the average home value is just over $190,000. El Cajon, nestled amid the rolling hills inland from the coast, is a mostly middle class community. Homes in El Cajon are, roughly, half condos and half single family detached homes. A majority of the homes here were built prior to 1970. Charming cottages and ranch houses from the 1940s and 1950s sit beside newer, Spanish-influenced construction. Features of homes here vary considerably with newer homes almost invariably offering air conditioning and access to swimming pools. ![]() Get all California Real Estate articles via
