Vintage Posters

by Christina Williams

What we now call vintage posters once played a major role in the evolution of advertising and later gave birth to the world of graphic design. The artwork on these posters, however, is still loved and collected for many reasons. The depictions of characters and symbols represent the history of past cultures and lifestyles. Some of these seem exotic when compared to the lifestyles of today. Another appeal is the classic nostalgia vintage posters project.

In the early stages of poster production, artists would present their work to advertising agencies in the form of an original painting, which was usually done in watercolor or gouache. If the paintings were accepted by the agencies, they were sent to press where lithographic prints were created. After they were printed, they were then circulated and put up on kiosks, and walls throughout the streets. From the late 1800s through the 1950s, colorful posters brought life, hope, awareness and pop culture products to the streets of Europe and the United States.

Vintage posters have always been popular collectors items, but they have also long appealed to interior designers. These posters provide an excellent art source for decorating both homes and businesses. There are many styles to choose from including classic sports posters, propaganda posters from the war era, liquor advertising posters, transportation posters, industrial age posters, jazz club and café posters and many more. Entertainment themes, like those of vintage movie and concert posters are also very popular for interior decorating.

Painted Stories of Vintage Posters

Cover Your Walls offers a large variety of vintage poster choices. We have prints available by themselves, as well as some framed prints. Part of the major appeal to many of the vintage prints we offer is that they all tell a story from various periods in time. It is easy to wander into the world of the Couture ladies in the angular hats and long sleek dresses of the 1930s, for example. This type of poster art, just like vibrantly painted landscapes, can take us to far away places wearing stylish shoes. Vintage art is an excellent choice to add to your home or office décor.
