Classical Art

The term classical, when applied to art, is very general. Classical is not a movement of art, but it can describe the art from several periods and cultures of the past. Someone may use this term loosely when talking about ancient art from the Greeks or Romans, or they may even call art from the Renaissance classical. However, contemporary art that is done in a classical style is actually considered to be neo-classical. Neo-classicism is basically the revival of ancient art styles.

Unlike abstract art that is based on self expression, individualism and free flowing energy and emotion, neo-classical art is very focused and precise. Artists who paint in this style choose a particular movement or style from past cultures and revive it in their paintings. Neo-classicism movements were brought about by artists in almost every century between the 18th to the present. Some believe that Richard Franklin is responsible for pioneering the most recent classical movement beginning in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
