Still Life ArtThe still life art style first became popular in the 17th century. This form of art in the Dutch tradition focused on the detailed realism of inanimate objects. Some art of this time also portrayed the symbolism of particular objects through the careful placement of them in reference to the overall painting. Life's frailty and impermanence was also reminded of by the depiction of certain objects that represented time. Some examples include a pocket watch, an almost burned down candle, a piece of spoiled fruit or an opened book turned to the last few pages. Still life styles of art were not as popular from the late 18th century and early to mid 19th century. However, impressionist painters revived this art form when the importance of technique was weighed with great significance. The sunflower paintings by Vincent van Gogh are popular examples of still life art from this movement. Still life has since been depicted in numerous art styles such as cubist, abstract, post-impressionist and pop art. The most recognizable paintings of still life are those depicting flowers, bowls of fruit, basins, jugs, dishes, or paper burdened desktops. Paintings of instruments, furniture, sports equipment and technology devices are also considered as still life. Objects in this type of art are always stationary, but their careful positioning and relationships to the surrounding environment can suggest images of how they would be utilized when a person walked into the picture. Popular Affections for Still LifeClassical and contemporary still life prints are adored by many art lovers because of the sense of simple sophistication they offer. This type of art represents the every day objects we often take for granted, but play a huge role in our mannerisms. Still life prints are an ideal choice for adding to the interior design of the home. ![]() Get all Posters articles via
