Japanese Art

by Christina Williams

Japanese paintings have been influenced by many cultural traditions throughout history. The Japanese brush stroke techniques have always been important to the art of writing as well as painting scrolls, silk screens, pottery, wood and later on canvas. Wood block printing called Ukivoe was popular in Japan during the Edo period. Some paintings depicting ancient Japanese culture were highly influenced by Chinese culture and the introduction of Buddhism.

Much of the beauty in Japanese paintings is based on elegant simplicity. The lines are either very thin or bold and thick and they are purposely placed. You will not see a lot of shading and blending in paintings from the early centuries of Japan. The paintings were almost cartoon-like. Japanese folklore and mythology also plays an important role in the art from this region.

Mystical dragons and giant bird-like creatures are captured in some of the beautiful screen paintings. Contemporary paintings of Japanese culture are full of colorful exuberance. Delicate flowers are popular subjects. Japanese landscapes have a magical emotive quality that is projected with light energy and calming tones.

Ancient Japanese Tradition in Art

For the most part Japanese artists stay true to tradition and are not highly influenced by western art movements and styles. This is one reason the art from Japan is so distinctive and holds onto its exotic charm. Decorating with traditional Japanese art can bring a sense of classic elegance and quiet sophistication to your interior décor. Cover Your Walls features many framed prints of Japanese art.
