Hotels Near The Miami Convention Center

by Sandy Mitchell

Located in the heart of South Beach, the Miami Beach Convention Center has a long, fascinating history. Opened in 1957, this facility has hosted both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions and was the site of Cassius Clay's victory over Sonny Liston in 1964 for the heavyweight boxing championship. Today, the Miami Beach Convention
Center is still vital, thanks to continual upgrades, including $35 million in upgrades within the last few years. The three-level facility spanning four city blocks boasts 500,000 square feet of meeting space as well as state-of-the-art telecommunications capabilities.

The Miami Beach Convention Center is also the home of the Jackie Gleason Theater. This recently renovated, 2,700-seat Art Deco theater hosts a regular schedule of big-name entertainers, speakers, and awards presentations. Recent events have included Alanis Morissette, the 2005 Clio (advertising) awards, and the musical "Hairspray." The theater is also available for corporate presentations and general sessions.

Staying Near the Convention Center

The Miami Beach Convention Center is adjacent to the Art Deco District and the South Beach area of Miami Beach. The area features a glistening white sand beach, vibrant and exotic eateries, world-class shopping, and meticulously restored Art Deco hotels just a short walk away. For something fun, you might try one of the small, low-rise Deco hotels along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive.

These hotels offer a true taste of Miami. Their pastel colors and retro styling have made them architectural icons the world over. Whether it's for a just a night or a week-long convention, staying at true Art Deco Miami hotel only adds to the experience.
