Hotels Near South Beach

by Sandy Mitchell

Miami's South Beach neighborhood, or SoBe as it is called locally, is located at the southern tip of Miami Beach. Developed in the 1920s and 1930s as a winter playground for wealthy northerners, South Beach has, miraculously, retained its pre-World War II charm. Original Art Deco buildings--over 800 of them--have been carefully restored with millions of dollars of private funding. Today, South Beach is a unique, vibrant area full on period hotels, fine dining, nightclubs, and shopping.

Accommodations in and around South Beach range from high-rise, downtown hotels to small, independently owned, low-rise hotels. Also within a short drive are the beachfront hotels of Key Biscayne and the mid 20th century architectural masterpiece, The Fontainebleau. Whatever your budget and tastes, there is the perfect hotel for you either right in South Beach or within minutes of it.

Art Deco Hotels

The Art Deco hotels of Miami Beach's South Beach neighborhood are individual, restored 1920s and '30s gems that incorporate the best of Art Deco design with Florida touches such as pastel colors, sunbursts, and flamingos. Staying here is like stepping back in time with all the modern conveniences like wireless internet capability, flat-screen TVs, and central air-conditioning. Each of these marvelous hotels is individual and the cost, style, and amenities will vary greatly.

The Art Deco hotels on South Beach are mostly located on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue between 6th and 23rd Streets. All are within a short walking distance of the beach, casually elegant restaurants, shopping, and "dance til dawn" nightlife. Many offer ocean views and friendly lobby piano bars. All offer uniquely American accommodations in a fun, exciting, vibrant neighborhood.
