South Beach Miami Shopping

by Sandy Mitchell

Best known for its Art Deco hotels, trendy restaurants, and nightclubs, South Beach is also home to a generous supply of fascinating, cutting-edge shops and boutiques. Bounded by 5th and 23rd Streets, and Washington and Collins Avenue, South Beach is the place to shop for trendy clothing, home furnishings, gifts, collectibles, and beachwear. Some of the national chain stores are here, but there are fun, one-of-a-kind outlets as well.

Each weekend, Espanola Way in Miami Beach's historic Spanish district (along Washington Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets), transforms itself into a street market and festival. Friday and Saturday evenings, artists, vendors, and musicians create a festive party atmosphere until after midnight. During the daytime, arts and crafts, fresh flowers, and produce vendors sell their wares curbside.

Lincoln Road Mall

A unique combination of architecture and function, Lincoln Road Mall offers an interesting, fun, and funky shopping experience. Built in 1939, this Art Deco pedestrian shopping street had fallen into disrepair until it was revitalized with private money in the 1990s. Today, Lincoln Road Mall is home to scores of art galleries and studios, antique and design shops, unique apparel stores, and independent bookstores, all nestled among the many restaurants and nightspots.

Lincoln Road Mall stretches eight blocks between Alton Road and Ocean Drive. Stores stay open late here. In fact, the street gets more active later in the evening. On weekend afternoons, Lincoln Road Mall hosts a plethora of temporary vendors selling jewelry, pottery, artwork, and fresh flowers.
