Lincoln Road Mall

by Sandy Mitchell

Built in the 1920s, Lincoln Park Mall was originally envisioned as the "Fifth Avenue of the South." Its shops did become fashionable, but by the 1970s, Lincoln Road Mall--like its Art Deco neighbors--had fallen into disrepair. The owner of the nearby Fountainbleu Hotel tried briefly to revitalize it by restoring some buildings and turning it into a pedestrian street, but to no avail.

The area's true revival didn't begin until 1984 when the South Florida Arts Center moved its headquarters there. Today, there are three exhibition areas, over 20 work studios that double as galleries, and dozens of independent art galleries here. Street artists and performance artists also frequent this area, making for a very diverse scene. Most of the art represented here is somewhat adventuresome. That's part of what makes it exciting.

Activities at Lincoln Road Mall

Besides the art galleries and art studios, Lincoln Road Mall is home to an eclectic collection of trendy restaurants and cafes, antique stores, and funky clothing and craft shops. The big names are represented here, too, but small independent shops hold their own. Craft fairs and street vendors also are common.

Evening is when Lincoln Road Mall really comes alive. Stores and galleries are open late and an exuberance fills the air. There's music, art, food, and even an independent film house that shows first-run Brazilian films. If you're staying in the area, it's easy to come and have dinner, stroll the shops, and enjoy this one-of-a-kind street.
