Miami Hotel Rooms

by Sandy Mitchell

The greater Miami area offers every sort of accommodation imaginable. From small, cottage-style hotels along highway A1A to sleek, high-rise hotels in downtown Miami, from exclusive beachfront resorts on Biscayne Bay to the individual, carefully restored, period Art Deco hotels of South Beach, Miami has something for every taste and budget. Rates are generally lower between mid-April and mid-December with the highest rates being during spring break and the December holiday season.

Amenities vary widely among hotels. Most Miami hotel rooms are air-conditioned, as the summer humidity can be stifling. Generally, the larger the hotel, the more amenities it offers. Common are room service, a pool, restaurants and lounges, and increasingly, in-room wireless internet capability.

Art Deco Hotels

A uniquely Floridian option for staying in Miami is to choose one of the many individual Art Deco hotels that dot Miami's South Beach area. Predominately located on Ocean Drive and the parallel Collins Avenue, most of the Art Deco hotels are individually owned, carefully restored gems from the 1920s and 1930s. Painted in sparkling white, light blue, pink, yellow, and sea-foam green, the Art Deco hotels feature such fun architectural details as flamingo friezes, porthole windows, and lots of neon.

The majority of the Art Deco hotels are located within walking distance of the beach, some right across the street. Most are furnished with 1930s period pieces to complete the image. Amenities and room rates vary from deluxe accommodations to more modest, affordable ones. The fun and the energy of this unique neighborhood, however, are available to all.
